FORGE IS NOW OUT OF BETA!!!
Now Kinn can begin the arduous and LENGTHY task of updating to 1.7!!!

Do note that the new biomes system will VERY likely slow down the release of Millenaire.

Basically all of you could help Kinniken by adding the new biomes to the respective village/lone building files, but keep the old ones to stay compatible to mods like bwg4 etc.

I'm hoping that everyone will keep 1.6.4 in mind when making village mods! (My server is sticking to 1.6.4 for a while, haha)

Well, why not make them compatible with both 1.7.x and 1.6.x?
All you really need to change is comment/uncomment a few lines in the config.

Byzantines everywhere and appear mostly in mountains.
Incas mostly in forests but no desert and appear mostly in jungles.
Japaneese everywhere but no desert and appear mostly in plains.
Hindi mostly in dry biomes but no forests and appear mostly in deserts.
Normans everywhere but no deserts and appear mostly in forests.

I dont know if i forgot anyone.

Yep, time to get to work :)

No promise on how long it will take though. From what I've heard from pioneers in 1.7 migrations it's going to be a big task...

My idea was this for Biomes...

Norman: Plains, Forest, Birch Forest, Black Forest
Japanese: Forest, Birch Forest, Extreme Hills, Taiga
India: Desert, Jungle, Savanna
Byzantine: Plains, Savanna, Mesa
Mayan: Mesa, Jungle, Swampland

lol oh that reminds me, Ru what is up with the Japanese in snow biomes? I'm not sure if you watch PCGamer's Millenaire Youtube series but if you'll recall when they were building up a Japanese fishing village a lot of the village was unprotected against the elements, two people lived outside, on the ground, on the snow, by a frozen lake, with nothing more than a column or two as a "house"

I believe that particular bit is the fishing place... and yeah, I ran into a japanese village in a snowy area and kept wondering how they managed to:
a) not freeze to death
and b) get fish out of the frozen lake, lol.

Maybe have a full building for the fishery and a torch or two to keep the lake unfrozen?

That sounds pretty good, although I am not sure about the Indians in Savannah's, or Norman's in the roofed forest. Byzantines maybe should be able to spawn in the desert, as parts of North Africa were part of their empire.

North Africa, geographically, is actually grassland on the coast. Byzantines only inhabited the coast.

Also, at this time, the par of North Africa the Byzantines occupied was invaded by Arabs in the 7th-8th century, and by the time of Basil's accession, The Byzantines had lost all of it's North African holdings. During the 11th century, their part of Anatolia may have has a semi-arid desert, but that's about it.

Basically, Byzantines should not be located in desert. No, just no.

So it is ok with you to alter the timeline a bit and have the Byzantines spawn in the desert?

First of all, Byzantines already have a "river" spawn bias, so they can still spawn in the "desert" because there's a river nearby.

Also, once Millenaire adds the Arabs in (probable, as they have both an interesting culture and architectural style), there would be TWO desert cultures (Hindi and Arabs).

But, that probably won't happen in the near future. So technically, I am fine with Byzantines spawning in the desert. I just wouldn't prefer them spawning in the desert.

Byzantines should spawn in plains, mesa, savannah and maybe forest. Also, say Good Bye to the birch woods, as I gonna replace them with acacia wood.

Kinniken: As you are working on a 1.7 update, I thought of letting the priests make actual readable books instead of the normal item, containing background stories and simple well-known myths. Some could have 2-3 parts and need to be made in another village or found in some dungeons.
Loads of text to Write I know, but I guess it would be cool for travelling Players like me.
Last but not least, Special books could trigger lone building spawns :p

I've spoken with Kinn about this before and he did not like the idea, he said that no one could write enough stories for it and when I told him I could he pretty much stopped responding to it...

Just a quick update: I'm continuing work on the 1.7 upgrade, but it's slow work. To give a very rough idea, I've gotten the compilation errors from around 2000 at the start to around 900. And once that's over there's probably a lot of other adjustments to do. So don't expect something too soon... Also, with all the changes, the first 1.7 release is very likely to be buggy as hell. You're warned ;)

Well, we could do a crowd-texting to see if we can get a minimum of texts into it.

Another thing to note is mod compatibility in later versions. Also, I want the myths to be BYZANTINE myths, not spin-offs of Minerva and Vulcan. NO Greek myths or Roman myths (my preference only, not forcing it upon you).

You've done a good job with the Byzantine culture, but I'm kind of strict on history, especially at this time... During the 11th century, there was no Paganism and such in the Byzantine Empire! Only Eastern Orthodoxy!

I am also sincerely sorry if I have offended you in any way. I have seen people have their temper flare when a person demands too many things!

Contacting the culture creator is also a good idea but I would keep it to PMs...

Hey,

Thanks for your feedback and ideas, and no, you were Not offensive :p
To create a Byzantine culture and not a Roman/Ancient Greek culture was my aim anyway ;) What I thought of was Temple ruins with some fancy stuff inside or temples that were converted to churches, like Athens Parthenon (Main Athena temple of the Acropolis).
Also, before the Ottomans conquered the East Roman Empire, almost all children were thaught Reading and writing using the Ilias and the Odyssey. Just a fun fact :P
So what I thought about was maybe some prayer books in Greek and some extracts of Homers stories, maybe some philosophy of Plato as well. But there are no concrete plans.

Oh my, this is not supposed to sound offensive im any way :P Even though I am German!

Kind regards,
Ticlon

The Iliad and the Odyssey... two very great poems...

I will be assuming that you will use the new clay blocks in the buildings, right?

Mhm, mhm... I know lots about Roman and Greek history, but not Byzantine history. Enlighten me!

I do agree that some parts from the Iliad and the Odyssey are a great addition to the family of Byzantine culture... maybe some Eastern Orthodox religious books? I know that religion was still an especially important part of Byzantine culture at this time...

and no, I am not stereotypical. I know that most Germans are actually kind these days!

And... maybe we should keep this is PMS, like Felinoel suggested...

Byzantium is the continual of the Eastern Roman Empire. When the great roman empire was weaken it was seperated to 2 empires. Western and Eastern. The weastern stays and faded in time while the Eastern having strong Christian influence became the Byzantine Empire.

Byzantine empire had greek influece as many of its emperors had grek origin and at the start of the empire there was paganism there too. Emperor Konstantine was paganist and reworote the christian book add paganist influnce in them. After that the christianism in Byzantium continued as you know.

The Byzantine language was greek and the Konstantinople was its capital. Many people from different countries was in the empire. It was was a medievel power and he made crusader wars and also Konstantinople was the target a crusade.

Bla bla bla... this is what i remember from school :P

Actually Istanbul is (likely) Greek-origin as well, as Constantinople was once the only larger City around, so they called it just The City (Polis). If the people said they want to go to Constantinople, they said something like: I go to the City, Eis tin Polin in Greek. Sounds like Istanbul :P

About Byzantine myths, I am Not that much into Orthodoxy, but if there is some stories, its all about Saints. Everybody knows Santa Claus, he is a Byzantine actually :P (when the Roman Empire was united though) :P

This is getting a little off-Topic :D

This is indeed getting off-topic! Unfortunately, I also like this discussion!

Yes, Istanbul is the renamed Constantinople. Turks renamed Constantinople into Istanbul, and also remade the city to become the huge metropolis it once was.

Also, another thing to note that Greeks during the Balkan wars (1900-1912 In The Balkans) had a dream of "retaking Constantinople"). That means that if Istanbul fell to a Greek siege (it wouldn't. Too heavily fortified) then "Istanbul" would probably be renamed back to Constantinople.

Oblsigr: your history teacher (as all should be) is correct on his/her history. Byzantium was not the intended target during the fourth crusades though. Egypt was the intended target, which was then the center of Muslim power. However, the pope gave the crusaders conditional absolution to the crusaders, where the crusaders decided that they were going to sack Constantinople. The pope forbade any attack on the city, but the letter arrived after the crusader fleet had left. This spelled the end for the Byzantine Empire.

Well actually Istanbul is still called Constantinople in Greece, and people still want to make it Greece again. Could be hard task as there live more people in Istanbul than in whole Greece :P. Dont forget that until around 1910 there lived more Christian people in Istanbul than Muslims. They get rid of them like the Germans did later... Not good.

For the sieges and the popes: The Byzantines hates Catholizism even more than the Ottomans. They actually had th Chance to become catholic and get help of the Middle-European forces, but they decided against it: they hoped that the Genuans (Italians) would help them as they controlled the Galata quarter of Constantinople, but they only Sent one ship. It did not help much.
At the final battle, the Byzantine emperor was turned into stone and deported to a cave deep under the Bosporus, by the angel Michael. The Day he resurrects, Byzantion becomes Greek again.

Brief update, so you guys don't think I've abandoned you :P

I've finished correcting the 2000 compilation errors so I can now start Millénaire again. Of course, it just crashes during launch for 50 different reasons... Considering the amount of rework I've had to do I'm expecting many, many bugs in my updated code.

Anyway, once I have a version that runs, even if badly, I'l probably do a pre-pre-pre-release so volonteers can help track down the numerous issues.
